EPA Lead and Copper Rule

The EPA has mandated that all utilities in the US follow new regulations to investigate lead materials within water systems. This rule is a response to the Flint Michigan water crisis of 2014. Unlike Flint Michigan, Hartselle has determined that there are no lead system-owned services through extensive efforts over the past couple of years of identifying piping material. If any lead is present in Hartselle, then it is owned by the customer and found on the customer side. Also, Hartselle receives 100% of its water supply from Decatur Utilities which injects a proven anti-corrosion inhibitor to reduce leaching of unwanted materials in the water supply. Different from Flint, Decatur pulls their water from one source. Flint switched water sources before the crises which altered the water chemistry and resulted in the anti-corrosion inhibitor becoming ineffective allowing lead to be leached into the water supply.

With this new rule, Hartselle Utilities is publishing all service material both system owned and customer owned for public awareness. You can search for your address in the inventory list here.

Individual postcards will be mailed to each address with unknown status which can be returned through pre-paid postage to help us identify customer owned services throughout our system.  If your address is listed in unknown status, please help us identify your service material by following the steps listed here.
