Senior Accountant
Hartselle Utilities (HU) is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to support the financial leadership of a complex, multi-utility public system. With service origins dating back more than a century and formally unified in 1989 through the consolidation of electric, water, wastewater, and natural gas systems, HU provides essential services to the Hartselle community with a commitment to reliability, accountability, and strong financial stewardship.

Position Overview:
Reporting to the Finance & Accounting Manager, the Senior Accountant performs advanced professional accounting work supporting HU’s electric, water, wastewater, and natural gas operations. This role provides high-level financial analysis, oversight of complex accounting functions, and leadership-level support in maintaining compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
The Senior Accountant serves as a key contributor to financial reporting accuracy, rate analysis, capital asset management, and long-term financial sustainability.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Advanced Accounting & Financial Oversight. Performs complex accounting functions requiring independent judgment, technical expertise, and interpretation of financial data. Oversees general ledger integrity, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
- Capital Asset & Fund Management. Manages and oversees fixed asset documentation, valuation, depreciation schedules, and compliance with regulatory and audit standards. Supports multi-fund accounting across utility operations.
- Financial Analysis & Strategic Impact. Analyzes and interprets financial data related to rates, operating costs, capital projects, debt service, and long-term financial planning. Assists leadership in evaluating financial impacts and sustainability of operational decisions.
- Compliance, Reporting & Audit Support. Ensures adherence to GAAP, governmental accounting standards, and regulatory requirements. Coordinates audit support, prepares required reports, and maintains strong internal controls.
- Leadership & Collaboration. Provides senior-level support within the Finance Department, offering guidance on accounting processes, assisting with workflow improvements, and collaborating across departments to strengthen financial operations.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university
- Master’s degree in Accounting or related field and/or CPA license preferred
- Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience, including advanced financial reporting and analysis
- Experience in a governmental entity or public utility strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and perform complex accounting functions
- Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
- Ability to be bonded
- Ability to travel for training, audits, and regulatory meetings
- Successful completion of pre-employment background screening and drug testing

Position Overview:

- Evaluate financial impacts related to utility rates, operating costs, capital assets, and debt service
- Support effective internal controls, secure financial practices, and regulatory compliance
- Collaborate with internal departments and participate in ongoing professional development

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional accounting experience; experience in a governmental, municipal, or public utility environment is preferred
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, utility and governmental accounting practices, financial reporting, and internal controls
- Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured
- Ability to be bonded
- Ability to travel for training and continuing education as needed
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and comply with random drug screening requirements
