General Manager

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Hartselle Utilities is seeking applications for the role of General Manager, the chief executive officer responsible for overseeing the operations of Hartselle Utilities under the direction of a five-member Board appointed by the Hartselle City Council. The General Manager will implement the Board’s policies, advise on compliance with laws, contracts, and regulations, and provide updates on the organization’s physical and financial health. This role also involves working closely with government agencies, private organizations, and HU staff to ensure high-quality utility services are delivered safely and professionally, while fostering positive relationships with our community and customers. The position will begin with a 180-day probationary period.

THIS POSITION REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:  A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required, with preference for degrees in business, engineering, or related fields. A graduate degree is considered an advantage.
Experience: Candidates should have progressive management experience, preferably with a focus on leadership in utility operations. Experience in public utilities is highly desirable.

Compensation and Benefits:
Salary: Starting salary is a minimum of $160,000 annually, with the final amount determined by the Hartselle Utilities Board.
Benefits: The General Manager will receive a comprehensive benefits package, including 85% coverage of family medical and dental insurance. Additionally, the General Manager will be eligible to participate in the Retirement Systems of Alabama.

Water & Wastewater Engineering Supervisor

Hartselle Utilities (HU) provides water and wastewater services to residential, commercial and industrial customers throughout the City of Hartselle.  HU is seeking candidates to fill a Water & Wastewater Engineering Supervisor position in our Engineering Services Department.  This position offers a competitive salary, which is commensurate on experience, and an extensive benefits package. Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree (B. S.) in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering field from accredited college or university.
  2. Minimum of 4-6 years relevant experience in water or wastewater utility systems; or any combination of education, training, or experience that demonstrates the above listed job knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job; supervisory experience is preferred.
  3. Possess and maintain Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) Grade I Water Distribution System certification and Grade I(C) Public Wastewater Collection Systems certification or obtain certifications within twelve (12) months of employment.
  4. Possess a current and valid driver’s license and must be insurable.
  5. Ability to travel as needed for work and training.
  6. Ability to work non-standard hours, as required, and subject to call out during emergencies.
  7. Completion of CPR/First Aid training acceptable to HU.
  8. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and random drug screenings.

Wastewater Operator Trainee

This position performs work to become trained in the safe and efficient operation of Hartselle Utilities Grade III wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), which includes learning proper laboratory testing, plant operations and grounds maintenance duties.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• One (1) year of work-related experience in operating and maintaining various types of equipment is preferred.
• Completion of CPR/First Aid training acceptable to HU.
• Possess a current and valid driver’s license; must be insurable.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama Grade III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification within twenty-four (24) months of hire.
• Ability to work non-standard, shift work hours.
• Ability to travel as needed for training.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and random drug screens.

Laborer

Hartselle Utilities provides drinking water, sanitary sewer, and natural gas utility services to residential, commercial and industrial customers throughout the City of Hartselle.

HU is seeking candidates to fill laborer positions in our Field Operations Department.  This position offers a minimum starting pay of $18 per hour.  Starting pay is commensurate on experience.  In addition to pay, HU provides an extensive benefits package.

This position performs manual labor in our Field Operations work crews and learns to perform semi-skilled work in the maintenance, operation, repair and construction of Hartselle Utilities’ water, sewer, and natural gas distribution and collection systems.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Prior work experience in an industrial/mechanical setting, operating, or working alongside backhoe, loader, forklift or related material handling equipment experience is preferred.
• Possess a current and valid Class A CDL or ability to obtain CDL; and be insurable.
• Must reside within a ten (10) mile radius of HU’s warehouse facility located at 800 Sparkman Street NW, Hartselle, AL.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Natural Gas Operator Qualification Training (OQT) as established by the APSC with 180 days of employment.
• Ability to successfully complete Operator Qualification Training (OQT) modules and associated field evaluations applicable to this position.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Alabama Grade I Water Distribution System certification and Grade I(C) Public Wastewater Collection Systems certification within five (5) years of employment.
• Completion of CPR/First Aid training acceptable to HU.
• Ability to travel as needed for work and training.
• Ability to work non-standard hours and participate in HU on-call rotation schedule.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and random drug screenings.
