Meter Reader
Location: Hartselle Utilities Main Office, Hartselle, Alabama
Department: Customer Service
Pay Range: $18.00 – $21.00 per hour (based on experience)
Schedule: Full-Time | Monday – Friday | 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Join Our Team
Hartselle Utilities is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Meter Reader to join our Customer Service Department.
This position is responsible for reading electric, natural gas, and water meters throughout the Hartselle Utilities service area. Because Hartselle Utilities currently utilizes manual meter reading processes, accurate visual meter readings are essential to ensure proper customer billing each month.
This is an outdoor position that requires walking routes and working in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow. If you enjoy working independently, staying active throughout the day, and performing work that directly supports utility operations and customer service, we would love to hear from you.
What You’ll Do
- Read electric, natural gas, and water meters for residential, commercial, and industrial customers
- Record meter readings using handheld electronic meter reading devices
- Follow established routes and complete meter readings according to scheduled deadlines
- Verify unusually high or low meter readings and document irregularities
- Report damaged meters, meter boxes, leaks, unauthorized connections, or other service concerns
- Clean water meter boxes as needed
- Upload meter reading data for customer billing purposes
- Operate and inspect assigned work vehicle and equipment
- Communicate with supervisors and coworkers regarding route issues or customer concerns
What We’re Looking For
- High school diploma or GED
- Previous meter reading, route work, utility, or outdoor work experience preferred
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Basic computer and handheld device skills
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Strong work ethic and ability to work independently
Candidates must successfully pass a background check including motor vehicle report and drug screening.

- Full-time position
- Monday through Friday
- Regular work hours are 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
