Hartselle Utilities (HU) is seeking an experienced Accountant to support the financial operations of a complex multi-utility system. With service origins dating back more than a century, HU was formally established in 1989 through the consolidation of electric, water, wastewater, and natural gas systems. Today, we serve the Hartselle area as a public utility committed to reliability, accountability, and sound financial stewardship.
This role is ideal for an accounting professional with experience in utility, governmental, or other regulated environments who enjoys working with multiple funds, capital assets, rates, and compliance requirements.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Finance and Accounting Manager, the Accountant performs professional-level accounting work supporting HU’s electric, water, wastewater, and natural gas operations. Responsibilities include financial reporting, reconciliations, transaction processing, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and GAAP.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Perform professional accounting functions supporting Hartselle Utilities’ electric, water, wastewater, and natural gas operations
- Maintain accurate financial records and process routine and complex accounting transactions
- Assemble, analyze, and interpret financial data to support internal and external financial reporting
- Assist with reconciliations, audits, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations
- Evaluate financial impacts related to utility rates, operating costs, capital assets, and debt service
- Support effective internal controls, secure financial practices, and regulatory compliance
- Collaborate with internal departments and participate in ongoing professional development

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional accounting experience; experience in a governmental, municipal, or public utility environment is preferred
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, utility and governmental accounting practices, financial reporting, and internal controls
- Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured
- Ability to be bonded
- Ability to travel for training and continuing education as needed
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and comply with random drug screening requirements
