Meter Reader
Hartselle Utilities provides electric, natural gas, and water services to residential, commercial, and industrial customers within the City of Hartselle. We are currently seeking a dependable and detail-oriented individual to join our Customer Service Department as a Meter Reader.
This position is responsible for manually reading electric, gas, and water meters across our service area. Because Hartselle Utilities does not currently use automated (AMI) meters, accurate visual meter readings are essential each month. Successful candidates must have strong attention to detail, the ability to work with handheld electronic devices, and familiarity with basic computer software.
This is an outdoor position that requires daily route completion in all weather conditions, including rain, heat, cold, and snow. A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required to meet our vehicle insurance qualifications.
Starting pay ranges from $18 to $21 per hour, based on experience. Hartselle Utilities also offers a comprehensive benefits package.
Responsibilities:
- Reads electric, natural gas, and water consumption meters used by residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
- Walks or drives vehicle through established routes and enters readings of meter dials.
- Records meter data utilizing a portable computerized meter reading device.
- Adheres to established routes to ensure that all meters are read and reading recorded to ensure that all work is completed according to established deadlines.
- Checks for meter reading errors; performs corrections, if necessary; documents any inconsistencies or irregularities.
- Performs billing activities to include submitting or uploading meter readings to the computer to generate customer bills.
- Re-verifies readings to confirm excessively high or low meter consumptions as required.
- Cleans water meter boxes; reports problems or defects to supervisor.
- Recommends replacement of old or damaged meters, meter boxes and lids.
- Reports customer complaints, problems, and unauthorized connections to supervisor.
- Inspects work truck for maintenance issues and to ensure truck is operable.
- Conducts periodic inventory of assigned truck, parts, and supplies.
- Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for information.
- Prints and receives various reports, or other documentation.
Qualifications:
- High School Degree or Equivalent required.
- Previous work experience as meter reader or route experience is preferred.
- Able to work outdoors, in all weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Computer literate, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel, and e-mail.
- Possess a current and valid driver’s license and must be insurable.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and random drug screenings.
