Position Overview:
Hartselle Utilities is seeking a highly motivated Utility Engineer to join our Engineering Services Department. Reporting to the Engineering Services Manager, this position is responsible for the technical, operational, and compliance-related work associated with the planning, operation, construction, and maintenance of our water, wastewater, and natural gas systems. This role requires applying engineering principles and industry best practices to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant utility operations.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Utility System Operations – Organize and oversee activities necessary for the proper operation of natural gas, water, and wastewater systems, including projects, collaboration with regulatory agencies, and operational analysis.
  • Technical Engineering – Perform engineering duties including design, review, estimating, technical support, and system modeling.
  • Regulatory Compliance – Ensure operations meet all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Utility Inspections – Perform inspections of installations to ensure adherence to design standards, HU specifications, and regulatory requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, or related engineering field; Alabama P.E. license preferred.
  • 4–6 years of relevant experience in gas, water, or wastewater utility systems; supervisory experience preferred.
  • ADEM Grade I Water Distribution and Grade I(C) Wastewater Collection certifications, or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Valid Alabama driver’s license.
  • Ability to work nonstandard hours, including emergency call-outs.
  • Must pass pre-employment background check and random drug screenings.

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local utility regulations.
  • Proficiency with SCADA, GIS, CAD, and hydraulic modeling.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Ability to perform fieldwork safely in varied environmental conditions.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, kneeling.
  • Occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Work may involve exposure to high-pressure gas, energized equipment, confined spaces, and chemicals.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based with frequent field inspections and project oversight.
  • Safety protocols and PPE use are required for field activities.
